PQ Systems turns to the Reprise License Manager (RLM) for concurrent-user Licensing Solution

Summary: “The license sharing feature provided in RLM’s product was another important component of PQ Systems’ decision-making.  The company wanted to consume only one license token even when a user runs multiple instances of a protected application on a computer. Other vendors did not offer the license sharing, nor did they allow sharing licenses on a per-user basis under terminal services.”

About PQ Systems:

When PQ Systems, Inc. needed a solution that would allow the software development company to offer concurrent-user licenses to customers, the firm turned to RLM.

“We looked at a number of potential licensing vendors,” says Bob Sledge, software developer, “but RLM offered the product that best fit our needs.”

One consideration was the appeal of a local license server, rather than a “license server in the cloud,” Sledge points out. “We did not want our customers to require internet access in order to use our software.”

The license sharing feature provided in RLM’s product was another important component of PQ Systems’ decision-making.  The company wanted to consume only one license token even when a user runs multiple instances of a protected application on a computer. Other vendors did not offer the license sharing, nor did they allow sharing licenses on a per-user basis under terminal services. “This was a big plus for us,” says Sledge.

A final consideration was the cost of RLM, which unlike some of its competitors, does not require the vendor to “sell an organ to be able to afford it,” Sledge says.

PQ Systems, Inc., is a developer of software products that support improvement of products and processes in a variety of industries. PQ Systems was incorporated in 1984, when the first version of its popular SQCpack software program was released, concomitant to its consulting services to help companies improve products and services using data analysis. Cardiovascular Simulation, Inc. Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: “… One of our key contacts recommended RLM since they were using it already.  We have been very happy with our experience to-date, and would highly recommend RLM to any small start-up such as ours that wants to focus on what makes you great and leave license management to the pros.”

About CVSim:
Cardiovascular Simulation, Inc.[]
The mission of Cardiovascular Simulation, Inc. (CSI) is to be the world-leader in software for cardiovascular applications including medical device design, biomedical research, and virtual surgical planning tools for therapeutic interventions.  The company is a very small startup located in Mountain View, California, working in facilities provided by the Fogarty Institute of Innovation.

Cardiovascular Simulation, Inc.’s flagship software solution cvSimTM is a software application for patient-specific cardiovascular modeling and simulation.  Based on technology originally developed at Stanford University, it enables users to create cardiovascular models from medical imaging data for quantification and blood flow simulation.  Please visit our website (www.cvsim.com) for more information.

Why RLM?
The selection of RLM was based on both philosophical and practical considerations.  From a philosophical standpoint, the value-add of the CSI team is our extensive knowledge of cardiovascular modeling and simulation methodology.  Therefore, whenever possible, we rely on cost-effective commercial libraries and open-source software for non-core technology such as license management.

From a practical standpoint, we needed a license management solution that was easy to implement, cross-platform (Windows & Linux), and cost-effective for a bootstrapping small start-up.  Another particularly important consideration for us was that our software embeds several other commercial kernels that require a per-seat royalty fee so robust license management was critically important.  We discovered Reprise by tapping into our network.  One of our key contacts recommended RLM since they were using it already.  We have been very happy with our experience to-date, and would highly recommend RLM to any small start-up such as ours that wants to focus on what makes you great and leave license management to the pros.

Achronix Semiconductor Licenses the Reprise License Manaager (RLM)

Summary: Reprise Software Inc. today announced that Achronix Semiconductor, developer of the world’s fastest field programmable gate array (FPGA) called Speedster, has licensed the Reprise License Manager (RLM).

”The Reprise License Manager’s capability, simplicity and value were a good fit for our company,” said Raymond Nijssen, chief software architect at Achronix Semiconductor. “We were impressed with what we saw in Reprise and RLM and believe our customers will be too,” Nijssen added.

The Reprise License Manager from Reprise Software, now in its fifth major release, was created by the original developers of FLEXlm/FLEXnet to offer software companies an alternative. RLM is more powerful and has a smaller footprint than older license managers. With a built-in web server for administration and a published spec for its report log output, RLM lowers costs for end users of software as well.

“We welcome Achronix to the ever-growing list of RLM licensees”, stated Matt Christiano, founder and CEO of Reprise Software. “We’re gratified to see more companies in the electronic design space trust Reprise and RLM to offer a superior license management solution with good value.”

Structural Vibration Solutions Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: Structural Vibration Solutions generates as many licenses as they need without any extra cost. They provide their customers with a time limited evaluation license which can be turned into a permanent node locked license after purchase which they can activate online using the internet or offline using a telephone or email.

About Structural Vibration Solutions:

A Complex task with a simple solution[]

Structural Vibration Solutions A/S in Denmark is a world-renowned developer and supplier of ARTeMIS Extractor. ARTeMIS Extractor is the leading software for Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) – the modal analysis software for the vast number of cases where it is preferred not to control or measure the vibrational loading on structures.

Structural Vibration Solutions patented software products are unsurpassed in the world, and their many references around the globe are proof of this. Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) is the only thing they do, making them extremely specialized.

The ARTeMIS modal software is an open, and user friendly platform for modal testing, modal analysis and modal problem solving. If you can measure the vibrations, ARTeMIS Extractor can give you the modes in terms of mode shape, natural frequency and damping ratio.

The ARTeMIS Extractor software is used around the globe within Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Offshore, Maritime &  Automotive engineering. Eg. Siemens, NASA, Boeing, Stone Cutter Bridge among others. The size of the structure you want to measure does not matter.

What matters?
Time is money and therefore it’s very important for Structural Vibration Solutions A/S to offer their customers the possibility to measure and use the ARTeMIS Extractor software during normal service state of the structure which also means that they can measure the structure in its true boundaries. ARTeMIS Extractor gives customers fast and automatic results which save them time and money.

RLM has simplified license distribution!
It has been a key issue from the beginning that Structural Vibration Solutions A/S needed a licensing system as flexible as the rest of their own ARTeMIS Extractor Software. RLM has been able to provide us with a system which fulfills their requirements.

Today the homepage www.svibs.com attracts a huge number of people from around the globe who daily download the software for evaluation. Therefore it’s important that the system is easy and fast for customers to use, experiencing success with ARTeMIS Extractor software right away.

Structural Vibration Solutions generates as many licenses as they need without any extra cost. They provide their customers with a time limited evaluation license which can be turned into a permanent node locked license after purchase which they can activate online using the internet or offline using a telephone or email.

Structural Vibration Solutions A/S does not carry any physical inventory, so the RLM licensing system is a crucial part of our operations and a reason for our success in the global market.

Silicon DSP Corporation Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: “One requirement was to provide customers with a time limited evaluation license that can be turned into a permanent node locked license after purchase. The other requirement was to support concurrent floating licenses. So we expected a whole bunch of coding and additional work in order to support floating licenses, but to our surprise we did not need to change a single line of code. Converting a node-locked evaluation or permanent license into a floating license is controlled by the license file itself. So by just modifying a text file and re-running Reprise utilities we support concurrent floating licenses. And this works whether the application is written in C or Java.”

About Silicon DSP Corporation:

Design and Modeling for DSP Implemenations in ASIC and DSP Processors

At Silicon DSP Corporation, we needed to integrate a license management system into multiple products on multiple platforms.

RLM Simplified our License Distribution
One requirement was to provide customers with a time limited evaluation license that can be turned into a permanent node locked license after purchase. And this works whether the application is written in C or Java.

RLM’s Pricing gave us Freedom
Reprise’s price structure provided another great advantage because we can generate as many licenses as we need without added costs. This translated into a great benefit to our customers because we could generate two licenses, one for home use and one for the workplace. And if for some reason a machine was down we could generate a new license. Thus we did not have to worry about running out of a fixed number of licenses.

Customizable RLM License Files Reduce Support Load
With respect to the concurrent floating licenses, the fact that the end customer can change the IP address pointing to the license server simply by editing the license file without our company’s involvement was a great plus. This saves us time and effort. We send the license text file to the customer and let them change the address based on their internal system. The security and protection for our product is in the node locked license on the server.

Web-based Documentation helps our Customers
Finally, we were able to leverage Reprise’s web based documentation to provide our customers with operational insight into how to optimize the RLM licensing environment.

Limit State Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: “When looking for licensing software for LimitState:GEO we came across RLM, and quickly found it to be a good fit for us – clear documentation, cross-platform support and, equally important, low upfront pricing for small companies!  Another licensing system we considered had relied on intermittent communications with a 3rd party webserver (which we would have no control over). We prefer RLM because we have complete control, and our customers do not require internet connectivity after their license has been installed.”

About LimitState:

Developers of powerful yet easy to use engineering analysis software

LimitState software helps engineers to rapidly evaluate the safety of bodies and structures. We incorporate cutting edge optimization technology in our software to efficiently identify when a loaded solid body or structure will fail.

LimitState:RING is a world-leading software application for assessing the safety of masonry arch bridges, the most common bridge type found in Europe. LimitState:RING can analyze single and multi-span bridges, with or without defects, and subject to highway or railway loading vehicles.

LimitState:GEO is an exciting new software application for geotechnical stability problems. Users can quickly and easily analyze problems of almost any type – including combined problems simultaneously involving slope stability, retaining walls, foundation footings and tunnels. At the time of writing the software is being used, for example, by one customer to help finalize the complex foundations supporting the inclined columns carrying the new Liverpool FC stadium roof.

Why RLM?
When looking for licensing software for LimitState:GEO we came across RLM, and quickly found it to be a good fit for us – clear documentation, cross-platform support and, equally important, low upfront pricing for small companies!  Another licensing system we considered had relied on intermittent communications with a 3rd party webserver (which we would have no control over). We prefer RLM because we have complete control, and our customers do not require internet connectivity after their license has been installed.

Using Internet Activation
Due to time pressures we initially issued RLM license files manually, but have now switched to internet activation. As well as cutting needless support queries (‘how do I find my hostid?’, etc), the records automatically created by the internet activation server means that we can keep track of both trial and full licenses more effectively than before.

Named-User Licenses Solve Pricing Dilemma
With traditional floating network licenses if the software runs quickly, a single user license can service the needs of large numbers of users. However, as we have spent thousands of developer hours to ensure customers can create and solve a problem in minutes – rather than the hours or days associated with legacy software, another priority for us was to ensure that this speed of operation did not adversely affect sales. The highly price-sensitive nature of the engineering analysis software market meant that charging a significant premium for our software was not a realistic option, so we instead turned to the ‘named user’ license feature provided by RLM, which allows us to limit the number of named individuals entitled to share a single license in a given 24 hour period. To date, customers find this solution satisfactory. They particularly like the fact that they can edit the named user list themselves as their user population changes.

Joe Alter Inc. Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: “With RLM we have been able to untangle our order/upgrade process, avoid last minute shipping costs and provide our customers with a much more flexible, high level of service.”

About Joe Alter, Inc.: []

Providing powerful tools to create realistic special effects

Joe Alter, Inc develops software for creating photo realistic 3D hair for Film, TV, and videogames. Our “Shave and a Haircut” product has been used on numerous feature films including “King Kong”,  Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix, Pirates of the Caribbean : World’s End, XMen-2, and more.

Our licensing requirements serve users with hundreds of workstations and rendernodes. We support multiple versions of Linux, Windows and OSX. Finding a satisfactory licensing system for these requirements that is still affordable was a real challenge.

With RLM we have been able to untangle our order/upgrade process, avoid last minute shipping costs and provide our customers with a much more flexible, high level of service.

RLM has had an immediate impact on customer satisfaction, and has resulted in increased sales.

The developer support at Reprise is top notch, and the product works.

Autoform Licenses the Reprise License Manager (RLM)

Summary: Reprise Software Inc. is pleased to announce that the leading provider of software solutions for the sheet metal forming industry, AutoForm Engineering GmbH, has selected Reprise Software’s Reprise License Manager (RLM) for its various engineering design product lines. AutoForm Engineering will use RLM to enable secure license models that will allow it to package and price its software to match its customers’ preferences.

The Reprise License Manager TM (RLM) offers innovative license models and policies to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) while better addressing the needs of enterprise software end-users. Although RLM resembles popular licensing systems in architecture and administration, its advantages are apparent in its simplicity, performance and value; three under-served areas in the marketplace today. RLM is used widely in the scientific and engineering software markets.

AutoForm Engineering’s Development Manager, Andreas Krainer said, “The technical evaluation of RLM proved that RLM was more than capable of handling our licensing needs. RLM’s simple design makes implementation easy and straightforward. On the business side, we are comfortable that Reprise has the experience and know-how to support us now and in the coming years as we deploy our software with RLM.”

“We are very pleased that AutoForm Engineering has selected the Reprise License Manager as its license management solution,” said Matt Christiano, Reprise Software’s founder and president. “Industry leaders, such as AutoForm Engineering, are realizing the benefits of RLM’s unique technical innovations within a design that is already familiar to most developers and end users.”

RLM supports a core set of license types with license policy removed from the software and placed into the license key – in order to make integration and support easier for Independent Software Vendors, and to make the meaning of the license more transparent to the end-user community. Perhaps most important to end users, Reprise Software is committed to fully documenting the usage data format and partnering with third party report writer vendors to support it in order to expand the available sources of end user reporting tools.
