Your biggest customers sometimes connect their geographically
dispersed sites via a wide area network (WAN). When they do, they
can share your floating licenses across the globe. This may or may
not be desirable from your point of view depending on the spirit of
your license agreement with your customers. For a variety of
reasons (exclusive territory assignments, increasing pricing depth,
etc), you may want your licenses to be used only within a particular
time zone or zones.
With RLM, you can assign a "timezone=" keyword to enable the
use of your software only within specified time zones, disabling it
elsewhere. This allows you to differentiate your licenses by
coverage area (or continent) and allows you to charge a higher fee
for licenses that cover a wider time zone range, and conversely
charge less for licenses that are more tightly restricted. Most
importantly, it gives you a transparent mechanism to keep your
customers in compliance with the intent of your licensing policies.
Importantly, once you integrate RLM into your applications, no
software changes or rebuilds are are needed to start supporting WAN
licensing. To coin a phrase, "The policy is in the license."
